How to add an NFS source to the Boxee Box

Question

Can I browse to NFS sources or add them as a File Source on the Boxee Box?

Answer

Boxee Box has support for the NFS network protocol, for more information about NFS please go here.

How to Use:

You have two options, first via the Boxee file browser:

  • Navigate to Files → Browse → Network

  • choose “Network File System (NFS) then browse to your source (computer, NAS device etc...)

  • Play the file you want

Second option is to add a file source via NFS :

  • Navigate to settings → File Sources Add Sources → “Network File System (NFS)”

  • Locate the computer you want to share from.

  • Add the directory and set the scan parameters.

Notes:

  1. Please note that only devices with Native NFS support will be supported on Boxee.

  2. NFS will start to scan for network sources only when you first enter it (browse/ file sources), if you added NFS source then it will automatically scan and start resolving for sources as soon as you start using Boxee.

  3. For more information about adding File Sources please check the file sources article.

  4. Boxee support only up to NFS 3, NFS v4 is not supported.

  5. There is no support on the Boxee for NFS security, you can not add UID or GUID to the Boxee.

I am at the same place as Bret, auto discover fails, and I'm confused why it's asking me for username and password. I should just be able to go ip:/path/to/folder right?

It would also be nice to know what UID and GID the application that accesses the shares will use.  Without this information, it is near impossible to setup proper security.

Have been trying to use the new NFS option with no luck, and cannot find any reasonable documentation on it :(

Autodiscover fails completely.  What technology are you guys using for this?  mDNS?  UPNP?

After it fails, I'm presented with a "Manually enter IP/name" option... if I click it, it gives me a dialog box with three inputs:

  1. Host Name / IP -- what format should this take?  Does the directory to mount go in here at all, ala "192.168.0.1:/some/directory" ?
  2. Username -- what relevance does this have in an NFS context?
  3. Password -- what relevance does this have in an NFS context?
